[applause] we've had a great afternoon. it is my great, great honor to introduce secretary kerry, who i have to say just came from the plane, literally just drove over from the plane because he's been in europe. obviously, handling the country's greatest national security challenges. and he has done an amazing job in the nine months he's been in office. so we are thrilled to have him. he has to -- he's rushing off after here to go to a meeting at the white house, so we are really thrilled that he was able to be here with us. he has been working with the center for american progress on a whole host of issues from our founding from china, don't ask don't tell, climate and energy, so we're thrilled to have him, and it's my great honor to introduce secretary kerry. secretary of state john kerry doubts -- similarly, well, excuse me, conversely the u.n. said that iran should play a constructive role. where do you see iran's role in the geneva talk and the future of building a stable syria? the secretary of state said specifically that iran he didn't think iran could play a constructive role unless they accept the geneva communique. which is the action plan of the group that met then which iran was not a member of neither was saudi arabia to implement a political transition. iran may not accept the geneva communique. the iranian position is there should be no conditions on iranian participation in geneva 2 or the syrian process. some may read the geneva communique and some of the language about the mutual consent, the transitional -- i won't go great detail here. we can after if you would like. as a condition regarding assad's participation or not. the iranian position, as i understand it, told to me by the foreign minister is that they're ready to help on geneva 2. they're in touch with the syrian government. some opposition groups. they believe th
